Italians don’t care what anyone thinks of them; they just want to enjoy life. This is the first time I read him in English, so perhaps some of his charm was lost in translation, but ultimately what made this book just ok for me is the fact that even though it’s just 7 years old, it feels really dated, and he constantly compares everything to the US, and most of the times he’s dead wrong about what Americans are really like.
Dieci giorni, trenta luoghi. Italy is a soft drug peddled in predictable packages, such as hills teta the sunset, olive groves, lemon trees, white wine, and raven-haired girls.

Lists with This Book. This novel is in such sad shape that I actually learned more from the epilogue summarizing it from an American’s viewpoint than I did from the rest of the book. Of course you could always wing it, but I assure you, the Italians will judge you!

Un viaggio lungo 10 giorni che appassiona e fa riflettere. I really felt as though I had received an excellent introduction to the Italian mindset! Severgnini details the complexity of the Italian mind, from its attraction to all things beautiful, to its suspicion and personal interpretation of top-down authority hence the “red lights are suggestions” thing.
Unfortunately for me an Italian enthusiast, evenmany of the references were too obscure.
Beppe Severgnini is one of the most reknowned Italian cultural observers of his generation. Read a couple of chapters and skimmed the rest.
Under any circumstance, the author appears to have a great grasp of utaliani subject and, even if it were all lies, the telling is fun and entertaining. Severgnini does and in-depth, self-deprecating, witty and humorous study of the Italian way of seeing the world; not much different than other Latin countries, really.
